The increasing use of plastic and polyethylene products on the one hand, and their non-degradability in nature on the other, have always been among the main concerns of environmentalists. Although the non-degradability of plastics does not mean that they remain unchanged in nature forever, the long process of their natural degradation, which lasts hundreds of years, has led to them being considered practically non-degradable. To help reduce this problem, some factories producing polyethylene products have started producing a variety of biodegradable products in recent years. Among these products are degradable nylon and nylonx, which we will explain further.
Types of biodegradable nylons
The degradation of ordinary nylons in nature may take centuries, but by adding some plant or chemical substances, this time can be reduced to 6 months to 2 years. In the production of biodegradable nylons, polyethylene materials are not completely eliminated, but a very small percentage of plastic polymers are used and the production is mainly based on degradable molecules. In general, this process is carried out in two ways:
- Plant-based: This type of Nylex uses natural and plant-based polymers such as corn starch. This product is ultimately converted into soil by biological processes of microorganisms.
- Chemically based: This type of nylon is produced by adding special chemicals such as an oxo additive. This additive causes the product to undergo oxidative breakdown of carbon chains and molecular mass when exposed to environmental factors such as light, oxygen, and moisture. This process ultimately breaks down the plastic pieces and converts them into CO2 and HO2.
Biodegradable nylon and nylonex are also known as green plastic. The reason for this name is their compatibility with the environment and return to nature.
